The car is at my parents’ house and I won’t be back there until Friday, so here’s what I know so far (sans pictures).
The brakes are shot, the floor is almost missing, the rear wheels are visible through the trunk, it leaks oil, and most of the trim is currently scattered inside the car. However, it runs VERY well. When the seller started it up for us, we left it running for a good five minutes. No harsh vibration, no pulsating, no smoke, nothing. My dad says it shifts smoothly, too, but we didn’t actually drive it anywhere.
It has suspension from a BMW so it sits a bit low, which is cool. The bumpers are inside the car, but I’m still on the fence about installing them. It also has a spare timing gear, but the one on it is made of metal instead of fiber, so that’s going to be unnecessary for a while. Supposedly, it has enough stuff in the trunk to nearly rebuild the engine, but I haven’t dug through it yet.
My plans for the future: get it roadworthy, obviously, but then maybe some rally lights and a tow hook in the front (which is actually functional in this case: the tow truck bent the front bodywork because of where the current hook points are) and I’m on the fence about it, but I’d love to get some louvers on the back window. Other than that, maybe an upgraded intake and/or exhaust, and maaaaybe a Swedish flag on the hood.

Sounds like you’re learning to weld (if you don’t know how already)!
I’d put the bumpers back on both as a matter of looks, and as a matter of making it less likely you’ll end up with a minor crash damaging hard to replace/repair bodywork. Old cars sans bumpers just look wrong to me, though I know not everyone shares that opinion.

I love it! I love it! I love it! Not my car (super jealous, btw) , if I may.... how about some wh ite f ifteen52 tarmacs? And maybe instead of the factory front bumper, a pair a split chrome bumperettes like a 67 Corvette. Would look grand with a pair of yellow fog lamps . And a thin chrome rear bumper like a Datsun 510 . A chrome single side mirror, or maybe some fender mirrors like an old 240z . A nice metallic baby blue paint job. And a mat ching blue tartan (plaid) interior. Those engines sound great breathing through a pair of side draft Webers and an unequal length header and a super small muffler . But if it runs great, I’d leave it alone, f or now. But it is not my car (super jealous, btw) , sooooo I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

67 Corvettes have the lower swoop on the bumper - it’s like a hockey stick shape. I like where your head is at but I think that might look a little odd on there, so I’m thinking how about a 70 Camaro split front bumper? Just 2 little chrome strips, one under each headlight.

Yep! Fun fact: I took a welding class in college and passed without ever touching a torch. I did so well on the written exam that the skills test didn't matter, so I just... didn't do it. So I have to relearn the basics and/or get a friend to help.

Those are some good ideas! I think we're going to keep the stock wheels, though, because we both love the hubcaps. There's a chance we'll paint the steelies white, though.

Volvos have a huge rally heritage, they were the Subaru
before Subarus
were S

Bummer about the rust and brakes, but awesome that it runs so well. I’ m curious about the suspension, I’ve never heard of somehow getting BMW suspension in there. Any idea what car it’s from, and if anything has been modified to make it fit?
You can have some benefit from a freer-flowing exhaust, but you can’t really upgrade the intake other than going from the one big airbox to single filters for the carbs. Even that might be a negligible upgrade since it’ll be breathing hot air instead of cold air from outside the engine bay. This is assuming it still has stock Strombergs or SUs? The factory intake manifold is more restrictive than the airbox ever will be, so you’d gain more from a different intake manifold, like the IPD manifold for converting to a downdraft Weber. So that’s getting pretty involved, and I wouldn’t recommend that unless you’re unhappy with the current carbs. Lots of fiddling with throttle linkages..

If you are leaving the hub caps (please do) , paint the steelies body color. Makes for a unique period correct look.

That is the idea. I was drawing a blank or cars with split bumpers. The Corvette was the 1st I could think of.

The holes in the pockets in the trunk are pretty common. In mine, I cleaned them up, rattle canned them with some cold galvanize stuff,
threw a piece of plywood in and
left them alone
.
If it’s leaking oil, first thing, clean and/or replace the pcv system. https://www.sw-em.com/pcv_diagrams_and_notes.htm

Hmm, I’m trying to think of other cars with split bumpers now. The Camaro is definitely my favorite, but the Vette looks good with them too! My dad had a 69 Camaro (saw your pic above), a 70 Camaro (though with full bumper), and a 72 Corvette (looks like a 67 but has a full bumper).

Is the Volvo 144 going to be Oppo COTY for 2019?! I hope so!

Yeah, I’m not sure what the suspension is from. The seller just said that he swapped it over from his BMW. It’s possible he only did the springs.
As for the other stuff, yeah, I probably won't really upgrade much unless something breaks.

It’s missing the hood emblem, so unless I find that in the spare parts pile, a prancing moos e will be going in its place!
